About the Club

Errede Book Club is a monthly virtual gathering space for Dominicans on the island and across the diaspora who are ready to read, unlearn, and reclaim.

Rooted in a decolonial lens, we dive into the stories that shape our identity—examining anti-Blackness, Trujillo’s dictatorship, eugenics, and the complexities of diaspora life. Through both fiction and nonfiction, we honor Black Dominican voices, confront silences in our history, and create space for healing and remembering together.

This isn’t just a book club—it’s a circle of memory, accountability, and community care.

First Cycle (Fall 2025 – Virgo Season Launch)

We’re beginning with three powerful novels that open up Dominican history and diaspora identity from multiple angles:

  1. The Feast of the Goat – Mario Vargas Llosa
A fictionalized but well-researched account of Trujillo’s dictatorship, assassination, and its aftermath.

  2. Soledad – Angie Cruz
A Dominican-American story set in NYC, exploring family, colorism, and diaspora survival.

  3. The Farming of Bones – Edwidge Danticat
A Haitian perspective on the 1937 Parsley Massacre under Trujillo, exposing the human cost of anti-Haitian violence.

FAQ

Do I need to speak Spanish?

No. All core readings for this first cycle are available in English. Some sessions may bring in short excerpts or context from Spanish sources, but everything will be accessible in English.

Do I need to live in the Dominican Republic to join?

Not at all. Errede Book Club is for Dominicans on the island and across the diaspora. All sessions are held virtually via Zoom, with an optional WhatsApp/Discord chat to stay connected.

Do I need to attend every session?

We encourage you to attend monthly meetings if possible, but we understand life happens. You’ll still get the reading list, discussion prompts, and community chat access even if you can’t make every Zoom.

How will I get the books?

Books are not included in the membership fee. You can purchase or borrow them from your local bookstore, library, or ebook/audiobook platform. We’ll share resources on where to find them affordably.

Who can join?

This space is open to all Dominicans—on the island and in the diaspora—across all genders, ages 18+, and life experiences. We center Black Dominican voices and invite those committed to unlearning anti-Blackness and colonial narratives.

Why do I need to apply?

Because this is more than a book club—it’s a circle of healing and accountability. The application helps us create a respectful, safe environment and ensure everyone enters the space with intention.

What does my contribution support?

For our launch cycle, 100% of proceeds will be donated to Latinas & Líderes, an organization empowering girls from under-resourced communities in the Dominican Republic. Future cycles may support other community projects.
