Is Astrology Witchcraft?
Ok let’s talk about it. Is astrology witchcraft or brujeria? Lets start by defining what witchcraft is. According to the internet, it’s the practice of magic, especially black magic, the use of spells.
Astrology is the study of the movements and relative positions of celestial bodies interpreted as having an influence on human affairs and the natural world. It’s the divination of the influences of the planets on a person or event.
I’m sure you’ve looked up your horoscope once or twice, whether it was in the back of your favorite magazine or your local newspaper. Those of us that have grown up with Walter Mercado, knew not to interrupt our moms or aunts when they were watching the news and the horoscopes came up! Horoscopes are only your sun sign, and just a snippet of what astrology has to offer.
As astrology becomes mainstream and more and more people share about it on social media, it may be natural to ask is astrology witchcraft? Maybe you’re asking because you’ve gotten a birth chart reading, which is a snapshot of where the planets were when you were born, and you were surprised at how much was revealed about yourself.
There are so many ways to use astrology and some people do use it in order to plan any spells they may have in mind, or any kind of magic, but astrology is its own practice. It’s a practice that has been used for centuries by Indigenous folk in order to track the changes of the season in order to know the right time to plant crops. The lunar cycle of the moon was also tracked to check the season and what to hunt for as well as tracking pregnancies to prepare for labor and delivery. Aside from divination, astrology has been used for very practical things.
Modern astrology has also been subdivided into different specialties. There’s electoral astrology where the best day is chosen for your event. People us electoral astrology for wedding planning. Speaking of weddings, people also use astrology to see the synergy between relationships and love compatibility.
Natal astrology is that snapshot I mentioned earlier, what the sky looked like when you were born and how that might impact your life. I love natal astrology and see it as a personal development tool.
Horary astrology goes all the way back to like 10,000 BC and is most likely the type of astrology mentioned in the bible. This is like a divination tool.
Medical astrology is where your natal chart is read for potential of disease and ways to help clear it. Of course anyone checking this out should also be seen by a medical professional.
There are over 80 specialties of astrology, these are just a few. But is astrology witchcraft? I would say no, not by itself. But lots of witches and brujas use it along with their spiritual practice. Astrology is definitely a thick subject, one which would take a lifetime to really master. And lots of folk like me who are lifelong learners, love to learn about astrology. Take it from a Sagittarius sun, I love to learn new things, especially esoteric and spiritual ones!
